Senior Optical Scientist or Engineer

META (formally Metamaterial Technologies Inc.) is a smart materials and photonics company that specializes in nanofabrication, design and manufacturing of highly functional products that harness the power of light. Through applied physics and advanced design, we are pioneering a new class of multi-functional materials—called metamaterials— which have engineered properties that go beyond what is found in nature.

We are looking for a Senior Optical Scientist or Engineer to join the optics group based in Halifax, Canada: a multi-disciplinary team developing optical components for a range of applications including augmented reality and head up displays. Members of the optics team focus on holographic technologies and have access to the cutting-edge optical hardware, design software and materials necessary to meet our customers’ requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop recording approaches to fabricate complex holographic optical elements.
  • Review customer system specifications and, from them, develop internal component requirements and select appropriate fabrication techniques.
  • Implement complementary metrology capabilities by designing and building tools to measure key optical characteristics of the product.
  • Develop test plans.
  • Iterate designs based on customer and partner feedback.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on all produced data and link to customer requirements.
  • Supervise and provide technical support for other engineers and interns.
  • Generate intellectual property for products, applications and process.
  • Support business functions beyond holography: e.g. design and simulation work for MTI’s nanolithography technology.
  • Contribute reporting and status information to project management team.

Requirements

  • M.Sc. in Optical Engineering, Applied Physics or related technical discipline – Ph.D. desirable.
  • Five years relevant experience (or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
  • Practical, hands-on experience in designing, assembling and using complex optical setups including specialized coherent sources, spectroscopic tools, and mechanical automation equipment.
  • Proficiency in developing custom software for automation, testing and analysis in Python, Matlab, R, Julia or other.
  • Experience with computer generated holography and/or adaptive optics in contexts like optical tweezing, astronomy or computer vision would be an asset.
  • Excellent documentation habits and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a rapid development pace.
  • Experience with optical simulations tools is desirable (raytracing, RCWA, coupled wave theory, FDTD etc).
  • Experience scaling-up optical equipment from lab-scale to volume production is an asset.
  • Willingness to learn key system concepts and testing protocols from other engineers and technicians with optical, mechanical, and electronics experience.
