Database Engineer Shared Infrastructure

At Instructure, we believe in the power of people to grow and succeed throughout their lives. Our goal is to amplify that power by creating intuitive products that simplify learning and personal development, facilitate meaningful relationships, and inspire people to go further in their educations and careers. We do this by giving smart, creative, passionate people opportunities to create awesome. And that’s where you come in.
We are searching for an engineer who is passionate about database administration, optimization, workflow automation. Our team builds and supports tools for other Instructure engineers to enable DevOps on every single team, and increase overall developer happiness! You will learn about our massive PostgreSQL based systems. You will contribute to optimize and automate the operations to reach great user experience, and large scale efficiency.
Culturally our team will look and feel very much like a highly collaborative start-up. We value innovation, so much so that we have quarterly Hackweeks; a week each quarter to work on relevant pet projects and features.

We need someone who can:

    • Explain why databases are one of the most difficult layers of the stack to work with, and how to overcome their special challenges.
    • Comfortably work in a SQL prompt on production systems.
    • Automate workflows by using script languages, or Golang
    • Thrive while working autonomously.
    • Be a point of contact for questions, both from technical engineers and less technical members of the company.
    • Be on top of problems before they become problems.
    • Be part of an on-call team.
    • Explain Amazon RDS and/or Aurora

What we look for (the more is better):

    • PostgreSQL, or some other ACID-compliant SQL database
    • Amazon Web Services, RDS, Aurora
    • pgBouncer, or some other form of database pooling
    • Ansible, or some other form of config management
    • Resource monitoring and alerting
    • Linux
    • Automation
    • Cassandra, or some other NoSQL database
